Tell us about the Shaftesbury Theatre?

Shaftesbury Theatre is the West End’s largest independent theatre and home to major productions, most recently Just For One Day – The Live Aid Musical. Alongside our main auditorium, we offer premium suites, flexible event spaces, and gender‑neutral restrooms, reflecting our commitment to innovation, accessibility, and inclusivity. For many guests, a visit to the theatre is a significant occasion, and our customer‑facing and technical teams play a vital role in delivering an exceptional experience from arrival to final curtain.

What motivated your business to take on a Creative Venue Technician apprentice?

We recognised that technical theatre is a hands‑on profession best learned through real‑world experience. Bringing in a Creative Venue Technician apprentice allows us to train emerging talent directly within our Stage and Electrics departments, giving them exposure to carpentry, rigging, lighting, scenic work, and show operation. It also supports the wider industry by creating accessible entry routes into backstage careers.

Why did you introduce apprenticeships into your recruitment strategy?

Apprenticeships allow us to widen participation, diversify our workforce, and support people who may not have had traditional pathways into theatre. Both of our apprenticeship roles emphasise potential, enthusiasm, and willingness to learn — not prior experience — which aligns with our values as a Disability Confident Employer committed to supporting underrepresented groups.

How did you decide which apprenticeship programme was right for Shaftesbury Theatre?

We selected programmes that directly reflect our operational needs. The Creative Venue Technician apprenticeship aligns with the broad, practical skill set required across Stage and Electrics, while the Theatre Hospitality & Ticketing apprenticeship supports our Front of House, Bars & Hospitality, and Box Office teams. Both programmes mirror the real structure of our departments and the skills needed to deliver exceptional guest and production experiences.

What has your overall experience been like working with an apprentice?

Our experience has been extremely positive. Apprentices bring curiosity, energy, and a willingness to learn, which enriches the working environment. Their structured training ensures steady development, and their presence encourages a culture of mentorship within our teams. We’ve also seen most of our apprentices stay on with us into full-time permanent employment, which continues to grow the loyalty and commitment to the work we do here.

What qualities or strengths has your apprentice brought to the workplace?

The apprentices demonstrate strong communication, adaptability, and a positive attitude — qualities highlighted in both person specifications. They show pride in their work, attention to detail, and a collaborative approach, which supports both technical and customer‑facing operations.

What tangible benefits have you seen since hiring a Creative Venue Technician apprentice at Shaftesbury Theatre?

We’ve gained additional hands‑on support across production, maintenance, rehearsals, and show operations. The apprentice contributes directly to the smooth running of technical tasks, helps maintain equipment, and supports both departments during busy periods. Their growing skill set reduces pressure on senior technicians and improves the smooth running of all departments involved.

How has having an apprentice supported your team’s day-to-day operations or productivity?

By assisting with routine maintenance, stock management, setup, and backstage operations, the apprentice frees up experienced staff to focus on more complex tasks. Their presence strengthens the team during rehearsals, fit‑ups, and show calls, ensuring smoother daily operations across the building.

Has taking on an apprentice helped address any skills gaps within Shaftesbury Theatre?

Yes — apprenticeships allow us to develop multi‑skilled technicians and customer‑service professionals who understand the full breadth of theatre operations. The Creative Venue Technician role, in particular, bridges Stage and Electrics, helping us grow talent with a dual‑department skill set that is increasingly valuable in modern theatre environments.

How has the apprenticeship programme helped you build a pipeline of future talent?

By training apprentices in‑house, we are developing individuals who understand our building, our values, and our operational standards. This creates a natural pipeline of future technicians, FOH staff, and potential supervisors who can progress into permanent roles with a strong foundation in Shaftesbury Theatre’s working practices. As addressed earlier, many of our apprentices have stayed with us, and some have even become supervisors themselves.

What is the biggest project your Creative Venue Technician apprentice has worked on?

The apprentices support customer experience, rehearsals, and execution of live performances, including scenic work, lighting installation, and operating stage machinery. Their largest ongoing project is contributing to the technical delivery of our resident production, supporting everything from pre‑show setup to final curtain.

What aspects of the programme have been most valuable to your business, and what did you get out of the apprenticeship process?

  • The apprentice’s ability to support multiple departments
  • Their structured learning, which ensures consistent skill development
  • The opportunity to shape training around our building’s needs
  • The positive impact on team morale and mentorship culture
  • The process has strengthened our workforce, improved operational resilience, and helped us invest meaningfully in the next generation of theatre professionals.

What advice would you give to other theatres or creative venues considering taking on an apprentice?

Start by identifying where hands‑on learning can genuinely support your teams, and choose a programme that mirrors your operational structure. Be prepared to invest time in mentoring — the return is significant. Apprentices bring enthusiasm, fresh perspectives, and long‑term value, and they help build a more inclusive and sustainable workforce for the future.
