Stepping into the world of live events doesn’t always start under the spotlight. For Theo Crete, it began with a curiosity about what happens backstage and led to a full-time career as a Production Technician at Bridlington Spa.

After completing a week of work experience with the technical team at the venue, Theo discovered the Creative Venue Technician apprenticeship. He knew it was the path he wanted to follow. Now working at the same theatre that first inspired him, Theo shares his journey, challenges and proudest achievements from his apprenticeship experience.

1) Can you tell us a bit about yourself?

I’ve always loved music, drama and live events. Most of my early experience was as a performer, playing in my school band and acting in plays, but I was always curious about what went on behind the scenes and how shows really came together.

2) What inspired you to apply for the Creative Venue Technician apprenticeship?

A work experience opportunity arose at my local theatre, Bridlington Spa, where I spent a week with the technical team. It completely changed my perspective. I loved seeing how everything worked backstage, and when the apprenticeship opportunity appeared, I instantly knew it was what I wanted to do.

3) How did the apprenticeship compare to your expectations?

At the start, I found it more challenging than I expected. There was so much more to learn than I realised. But in the long run, that was a good thing; it pushed me, helped me grow in confidence, and gave me skills I never thought I’d develop.

4) What type of events and productions did you work on during your apprenticeship?

Some of the most exciting moments were working on large concerts and events at Bridlington Spa, including shows by artists such as:

Being part of teams delivering shows I once dreamed of just attending was an incredible experience.

5) Which area of the apprenticeship did you enjoy learning the most?

Lighting was my favourite. It was completely new to me, and I’d never paid it much attention before. Learning how lighting transforms a performance gave me huge respect for this side of production.

6) Can you describe a project that really developed your skills?

Working on the Joel Corry show stands out. I was responsible for lighting the support act, Brett Haley, an incredible DJ who also works in lighting and tech. With more than a thousand people watching, it was intense, but it pushed me to perform at my best.

7) How did the mix of on-the-job and off-the-job training support your development?

The balance was perfect. On-the-job training showed me exactly how Bridlington Spa operates, while off-the-job learning gave me insight into how other venues work. The theory side, especially health and safety, gave me confidence in my knowledge and ability.

8) Which technical skills do you feel improved the most?

Understanding patching and the logical order of technical processes made the biggest difference. Knowing how and why systems work is essential in this industry, and that knowledge underpins everything I do now.

9) How did the apprenticeship prepare you to work safely in a live venue?

In the early days, most of my knowledge came directly from the course. College delivery, training like the ABTT Bronze award, and constant support from the Bridlington Spa technicians gave me the confidence I now have to work safely and effectively.

10) What does it mean to work as a Production Technician at Bridlington Spa?

It means a lot. This is the theatre I grew up visiting. After struggling at the beginning and questioning whether the course was right for me, it’s incredibly rewarding to now work here full-time and genuinely love what I do.

11) What skills from the apprenticeship are you using every day?

So many safety regulations, theatre terminology, customer interaction, ABTT Bronze skills and more. I use elements of the course every single day in my role.

12) What are you most looking forward to as part of the production team?

The variety of shows is brilliant. I’m excited to gain more experience in large-scale concert events, but also in corporate events where there’s often more creative freedom.

13) How has completing the apprenticeship changed your confidence?

It’s given me real belief in my ability. I now feel confident that I have the skills to build a permanent, full-time career in this industry.

14) What advice would you give to someone considering this apprenticeship?

Go for it. It can be challenging, but once you push through, you become part of an industry like no other. You qualify while actively helping to create live events; it’s one of the best decisions I’ve ever made.

15) Where do you see your career heading next?

Right now, I’m really happy at Bridlington Spa. In the future, I’d love to try touring, freelance work across different venues and possibly even work abroad.
